The Sound of Summer...

The summer gig list is piling up and the posts are dwindling. I'm hoping to rectify that here with a sneak peak into a few days/nights/afternoons that I have been privy to in the last little while.

Firstly - Ruarri Joseph

I mean that is a pretty cool name - Ruarri. RUARRI. And his name is not the only thing cool about him. A friend of mine and I stumble down to the Halfmoon Putney (great gig venue, like actually one of my favourites in this BIG city I call home).  I convinced her we needed to see this man and his guitar pretty much cause I saw a picture of him and thought - that man can make music.  And boy was I right. With a casual demeanour, Ruarri walks onto stage and it feels like we are all chilling in someone's lounge somewhere.  It's the kinda music that just distracts you from EVERYTHING and you get swept up in the melody. See for yourself...

(Not the best videos - but alas..)

Secondly - Will Varley

I LOVE having friends who are like 'I have a ticket to a gig for tonight, come?!'. Uh, obviously.  Now whatever the circumstances of this 'spare' ticket is - who actually cares. It's spare and it's mine now. I meet one of my oldest friends in Hammersmith (and by oldest I don't mean she is old, just that we have been friends since diapers were in fashion and somehow after years and years of separation, from Cape Town to South Korea to London we have found each other and it is such a JOY having her in my life!). Anyway, Will Varley, frankly he is a comedian. A claim to fame of having walked from pub to pub in South East England with his guitar and a tent - he has a story. A hilarious story. It was one of the least structured events I have ever been to in London.  Packed into a beautiful old theatre with plush red carpets the crowd all sat on the floor in an indoor picnic type vibe while Will simply entertained us.  He has a unique voice that demands to be listened to. His music makes one think about things, many things.

Thirdly (and lastly) - Tom Odell

This guy. A piano. A voice. A passion. He was just infectious. His performance captivated me. The talent on the piano is next to none other. So many artists now days simply play a few chords on the piano and descend into Elton J smugness BUT Tom Odell has proper skill.  Now for me a piano is THE instrument (after the basic acoustic guitar of course). So often I go to gigs and as I trudge (good word) through the crowd to the exit when the lights indicate it's home time, I am bitterly disappointed that the bands never play my favourite songs of theirs - however I realised (at the Will Varley concert actually - revert above - song ONE) that the main reason is that the song almost always contains a piano which is a difficult object to cart from show to show in a VW Beetle or the likes.  But not with Tom - considering this is his instrument of choice it took front stage and centre position and WOW what a performance. Speechless, danceless (a mean feat for anyone that remotely knows me!). He is just a talent that none can currently reckon with.

Better Together...

It's the birthday of the COOLEST girl I know today.  She is legitimately the best. No contest (it rhymes). I met her TWENTYFIVE years, ONE month (if it has THIRTY days (said with an Irish accent) (bracket within a bracketed bracket)) and ONE day ago.

She has been part of every moment of my life and is perhaps one of the only people in this world to really get me. And I mean like gets me, gets me - without any shadow of a doubt gets me. And I suppose that means she also knows how to get to me, like not practically cause that's easy, bus 39 from  Levana Close to East Hill/Alma Road, but like in a way that very few others get to me.

Anyway, without the little arguments, huge outbursts, uncontrollable laughter, the glint in our eyes when we both know what the other is thinking life would be dull. Remarkably dull. Vanilla as the Brits would say.

So, this is a shout out to my favourite person. Birthdays happen once a year but thanks for celebrating every day with me. Ah mushy.

Forever Young...

Wow. This life right. Isn't it a joy ride. To describe the amount of fun I have had these last few weeks would not only be impossible but also inadequate.

However, caveat: mild post World Cup depression is setting in. As a friend of mine aptly stated "I think of my life in terms of where I will be for the next World Cup." Well, ok not really, I have no idea where I'll be in SIX months but geesh it's been a fun month!

Anyway, WC chat over now but saying that I have been reminded once again how wonderful being young is. And now 'young' is not an age, it's a feeling (cliché much) but seriously. The freedom to go, see, do, be, change and then do it all again is beyond exciting! With the grace to get it wrong as often as needed we are handed a gift that is ours for the taking, EXPERIENCES! And that is really all life is right, a remarkable collection of experiences.  I live THOUSANDS of miles away from my parents and occasionally we sit down and have a fat catch up over Skype. Yesterday was one of those days. My folks are not old by my standards. They have now reached a point in life where the freedom of youth has been returned to them and boy are they taking advantage. I know that when my sister and I were growing up they sacrificed a lot for us and it gives me such happiness to know they are out there being "yes" people. Doing new things, experiencing how the Cape has changed or even just doing the same cool things over and over again (SAB should offer loyalty cards for visitors, I mean come on, how often can one literally do a beer tour is beyond me!)

So, may we all continue doing things that make us shiver in fear, laugh in ecstasy, breathe with relief and shine with happiness!

Here's some songs to keep us happy!

Magic...

It's impossible to put pen to paper about this. So I'll suffice with thumbs to touchscreen. Coldplay. One word. The name of a band. Yet the emotions that my mind filters down to my heart is in some-ways remarkable.

I'll say it. One of my faves. I'll watch them every SINGLE time I possibly can. Over and over and over and over yet again. One just cannot get enough.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to see them at the Royal Albert Hall in London last night. Now take SIX THOUSAND super duper fans and FOUR skillllllllllllled men and throw them in a circular arena with numerous musical instruments and it's bound to be a party. A right sick ass party at that. A blow your freaking socks off party. Party party party party party. And that is what we did last night. Just party, close your eyes and dance monkey dance.

Coldplay's music has evolved and yes many people have opinions that they are no longer the Coldplay they grew to love in the late NINETIES. And no, why would they be? It's nearly FIFTEEN years ago since the Yellow anthem was released. (Sidebar: the first time the sound waves of Coldplay's Yellow hit my ears I was in my room in Cape Town, a half pint of only ELEVEN years old and I vividly remember stumbling over the numerous obstacles on my bedroom floor to hit the double play record button on my tape recorder. That was the start of this love for this band and I reckon the start of my interest in music...HUGE SHOUT). Are you the same person you were at the change of the millennium?! Heavens I hope not. Honestly, thank goodness bands do new things. How boring if not!

And then there is the lyrics of their songs. Yes, we all have a person in our past that has destroyed The Scientist for us. And if we're honest they probably destroyed Fix You too. And also Magic. I suppose I could go on. But screw them. They tried their best and never succeeded (lyric win), in more ways than one. So that brings me to Ghost Stories.  Clearly written on the back of a horrendous break-up, Chris and the boys do a wonderful job in portraying hope. Something we see so little of in our lives. Hope for something better. Hope for something more. Hope for less pain and more beauty.  And boy was last night beautiful.

In actual fact - life is BEAUTIFUL. And with Coldplay the beauty is only exponential.
